Frequently asked questions
What are the GST rates in India in 2026?
The main slabs are 0%, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate on select luxury and sin goods. Special rates such as 3% on gold and 0.25% on rough diamonds also apply.
What happened to the 12% and 28% slabs?
GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, removed them for most items. Most 12% items moved to 5% and most 28% items moved to 18%.
How do I calculate GST from an inclusive price?
Base = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). For ₹1,180 at 18%, base is ₹1,000 and GST is ₹180.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For sales within a state, GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST). For sales between states, the full amount is IGST.
Do I need GST registration?
Generally if turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower in some states). Check the GST portal for your case.
