Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off $35 is 35 × 0.8 = $28.

Is 40% + 20% off the same as 60% off?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total is 52%.

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. The Percentage Calculator can do this too.

Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?

In most US states, sales tax is charged on the discounted price. In the UK and India, prices usually include VAT or GST already.

How do I work out the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). If $60 is the price after 25% off, the original was $80.
