How to use the Final Grade Calculator
- Enter your current grade in the class before the final.
- Enter the overall grade you want (for example 90 for an Aβ).
- Enter what percent of the total grade the final is worth (check your syllabus).
- See the score you need, plus a table for other target grades.
Formula used
Final needed = (Target β Current Γ (1 β w)) Γ· w
w = final weight Γ· 100. The calculation assumes your current grade covers everything except the final.

Frequently asked questions
How much will my final affect my grade?
It depends on its weight. A final worth 20% can move your grade by up to 20 percentage points.
What if the score needed is over 100%?
The target is not reachable on the final alone. Ask about extra credit or aim for the next grade down.
What if my class uses points, not percentages?
Convert your current points to a percentage first, and work out the final weight as final points Γ· total points.
What score do I need to pass?
Set the target to your pass mark, often 60% or 70% in the US.
Does this work for semesters?
Yes. Treat the final semester grade as the "final exam" and its share of the year as the weight.
