Frequently asked questions
How is FD interest calculated?
Most Indian banks compound interest quarterly on cumulative FDs. The formula is A = P(1 + r/4)^(4t).
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. In India it is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks may deduct TDS. In the US, CD interest is taxable as ordinary income.
Do senior citizens get higher FD rates?
Most Indian banks offer senior citizens about 0.25% to 0.75% extra.
What is the difference between an FD and a CD?
They are the same idea: a fixed sum locked for a fixed term at a set rate. FD is the common term in India and the UK, CD in the US.
FD or SIP?
FDs give guaranteed returns with low risk. SIPs in equity funds can earn more over long periods but carry market risk. Compare with the SIP Calculator.
